This document contains answers to some Frequently Asked Questions that you could find helpful when using Starter Templates.

Are Premium Starter Templates Available With Astra Pro?

No. Though Astra Pro comes with significant additional options for the Astra theme, it doesn’t come with any other Brainstorm Force products.

Premium Starter Templates is a separate premium plugin available only with our Essential and Growth Bundles. You can compare the packages here

Can I Upgrade My Astra Pro Package to the Bundle Packages?

If you already have the Astra Pro license, you can upgrade any time to Essential or Growth Bundles. When upgrading, you will be paying only for the difference in price between the packages.

If you’re upgrading your annual Astra Pro package to any annual Bundle package, the package’s expiration date won’t change. Since our annual upgrades are prorated, you will be paying only a proportion of the Bundle fee. The difference will be calculated for the remaining time until the package expiration date.

Will My Website Still Work if My License Expired?

Yes, your websites will continue to work correctly. If your package expires, this will result in your licenses becoming invalid.

Until you renew your license, you won’t be receiving updates for any of our premium plugins. Further, you won’t be able to import any new premium templates with the Premium Starter Templates plugin. On the other hand, any template you previously imported will not be affected by this.

Once you renew your license, you will be able to continue working with Premium Starter Templates normally.

Do I Download a .Zip File to Import a Starter Template?

No, the .zip file is not needed for importing starter templates. You can import templates with our Starter Templates plugin, which will import them to your website.

All templates are imported directly from our server. Starter Templates plugin will also install and activate all plugins and add content and settings.

Are Starter Templates a Child Themes for Astra?

No, Starter Templates are not a Child Theme.

Starter Templates are sets of the designed website pages or design elements created by our team. These can be imported as a whole website or as individual pages/elements of your website.

The child theme is a sub-theme of the Parent theme (e.g., the Astra theme). It’s primarily used to store any modifications you might add to Astra Theme (add filters or other custom code). You can read more about the basics of installing the child theme in this article.

Can I Delete the Plugin After Importing a Template?

Yes, you can delete the plugin after importing the starter template you need. Any imported content will still work properly.

On the other hand, you will no longer be able to import any additional pages, templates, or pre-designed elements (Gutenberg Patterns / Elementor Blocks) to your website as these are all provided by Starter Templates plugins. However, if you remove the plugin for any reason, once you install and reactivate it, these options will become available.

Can I Import Starter Templates on an Existing Website?

Yes, you can. Importing the single pages or pre-designed elements (Gutenberg Patterns / Elementor Blocks) won’t affect your existing content. On the contrary, importing the complete site template might change how your website looks as it comes with its own customizer settings and content. The imported content can also get mixed up with your existing content. You can check out more details in this article.

How Can I Reset My Website After Importing Starter Templates?

You can reset your website in several ways. To begin with, you can manually remove your plugins, pages, posts, and media files. Further, with the Astra theme, you can reset your customizer settings with the Customizer Reset plugin.

Next, if you need 100% clean WordPress installation, you can check with your hosting provider or use some plugins.

Some hosting providers offer options for completely removing and resetting your website installation.

Otherwise, you could use plugins like the Advanced WordPress Reset. Check this article for details on how to do this.

Can I Use Images That Come With Starter Templates?

It’s not advisable. We use stock and non-copyrighted (free) images from websites like Pexels, Pixabay, and Unsplash on all of our starter templates. On the other hand, we cannot take legal responsibility for any claims if the mentioned website’s policies change.

Accordingly, we recommend replacing all template images after the import.

However, Pixabay images imported through the Starter Templates Pixabay image library are free. Furthermore, images downloaded this way can be used for free under the Pixabay License. Still, please have in mind some additional rules set by Pixabay.

Now that you’ve imported the needed templates, it’s time for the final step in building your website with Starter Templates. Therefore, the only thing left is to replace the template (dummy) content with your own and to personalize your website. Further, you can modify the design to adjust it to your brand and needs.

This document will help you understand the basics of template designs and how you can edit them.

General Guidelines for Modifying Starter Templates

Starter Templates contain page designs and dummy content made by our design team. In addition, templates come with all needed plugins and website settings (Customizer, plugins). Once a template is imported, you’re free to modify it any way you need.

Here are some general guidelines that can help you modify templates:

 • The content (pages, posts) is created using the respective page builder. You can edit content using the page builder you selected when importing the template;
 • Header and Footer are created using Astra’s Header Footer builder. You can customize them at Appearance > Customize > Header Builder or Footer Builder ;
 • Sidebars are added via the Customizer. You can customize this at Appearance > Customize > Sidebar ;
 • Layout, fonts, colors, button settings are all set in the Customizer. You can edit them at Appearance > Customize > Global ;
 • Content for third-party plugins like WooCommerce or LearnDash is created through these plugins and will be located within these plugins;
 • Pages for third-party plugins like WooCommerce or LearnDash can be additionally customized in the Customizer under their respective settings.

Understanding Designs

Some designs are pretty straightforward to modify. Accordingly, you can change just a few Customizer settings or edit the design with the page builder as usual.

But sometimes, our designers use more complex solutions to provide you with such great designs. Hence, you don’t have to worry about needing additional plugins or access when you import a complete site. Everything we used for creating the templates was added to your website when you imported a template.

On the other hand, modifying these complex designs might get you puzzled sometimes. Designs might be achieved as a combination of Customizer and page builder settings or could be created using some plugin.

Thus, you should check installed plugins after the template import as a good starting point. Since Starter Templates import installs only necessary plugins, you could identify any plugin used in designs. Next, you should inspect the customizer and global page builder settings, as well as pictures and backgrounds.

Further down, we will explain several principles that could come in handy when trying to understand Starter Templates design.

Editing Templates After The Complete Site Import

To clarify, we made the example below to help you understand better how complex designs are created. Also, we will show you how to modify them.

Here, we used a Travel Agency template for Elementor. Once you import the Travel Agency template, you might notice the vertical lines. These lines are stretching from the top to the bottom of all website pages. We will show you how you could remove them:

Customizer Settings

Step 1 – All sections without a set background are transparent. In other words, you will see the global website background. You can edit the website background at Appearance > Customize > Global > Colors > Background.

Step 2 – Next, click on the Background color picker, and then on the “Image” tab.

Step 3 – Here, check out the background image. You will see that the lines are coming from a full-screen picture. Click on the “Remove Image” button.

This will remove the website background. As a result, all transparent sections will now look like this:

Transparent Sections

As you can see, the lines disappeared from some sections but are still present in others.

As mentioned earlier, the Elementor sections with the transparent background showed the website background image that we removed. This means, that in other sections, the lines in the background are coming from a different place. So, we should take a look at Elementor settings.

Editing With Elementor

Since the remaining sections are not transparent, so we will check their background settings in Elementor editor:

Step 4 – Navigate to your page, and click on “Edit with Elementor”;

Step 5 – Next, click on “Edit Section” for the sections still showing lines in the background;

Step 6 – Here, navigate to the “Style” tab and scroll down to the “Background Overlay”. Finally, you will see the lines are added as an overlay image. Click on the “Remove” (Trash Can) icon to delete the image:

Customizer - Remove Website Background

In this example, we showed you how to edit a design that combines Customizer and Elementor settings. Similarly, you can check out and edit designs in any template.

Replacing Images

When modifying the design, most often you’ll need to edit images. Here also, it’s important to mention that page or post designs are created in layers. Thus, check for images in sections, columns, and other elements when you edit your page with any page builder.

To illustrate this, we’ll show you examples of sections designed with Elementor.

Example 1 – Section Backgorund

In this example, we will show you how a section was built using the section background. The section was built using several layers:

 • Section with the background;
 • Heading (Fitness Trainer) widget;
 • Heading (Cristy Dowson) and Button (About Me) widgets.

To edit the background image, use the following path:

Step 1 – Start editing the page with Elementor;

Step 2 – Click on “Edit Section”, and choose the “Style” tab;

Step 3 – You can edit the background image under the “Background” panel.

Edit Section Background

Example 2 – Section Background Overlay, Image and It’s Background

The second example contains images in several layers. This is the structure of the section:

 • Section with the background overlay;
 • Image widget with set background;
 • Inner layers containing Heading and Text widgets.

Now, let’s see how you can edit images in this section:

Step 1 – Start editing the page with Elementor;

Step 2 – Here, click on “Edit Section”, and choose the “Style” tab;

Step 3 – You can edit the background overlay image under the “Background Overlay” panel.

Edit Section Background Overlay
Step 4 – Next, click on the Image Widget to edit the image. You can modify the image under the “Content” tab here:
Edit Image

Step 5 – Similarly to the section background, you can edit the Image Widget “Background”. To do this, switch to the “Advanced” tab and scroll down to the “Background” panel:

Edit Image Background

In short, your design options are almost endless. If you’re unsure how to edit any image, just carefully examine all layers until you find the needed settings.

Other Plugins and Starter Templates

Finally, our designers sometimes use additional plugins, so check your “Installed Plugins” to be sure. These plugins will be installed on your website when you import a template.

Further, keep in mind that this will happen only if you import the whole website. Thus, if you imported a single page, you would need to add plugins and dynamic content yourself.

Elementor Header & Footer Builder Plugin

The Elementor Header & Footer Builder is a great free plugin. It allows you to add separate elementor-designed blocks anywhere on your website. This way, the same section can be added to multiple places on your website. For example, some Starter Templates have subscription sections built using this plugin.

Elementor Header & Footer Builder

Thus, check your installed plugins for Elementor Header & Footer Builder when you import a complete site. If this plugin is present, all templates created with it will be located at Dashboard > Appearance > Elementor Header & Footer Builder.

To edit these templates, please follow these steps:

Step 1 – Navigate to Dashboard > Appearance > Elementor Header & Footer Builder and find the template you wish to edit;

Edit Template

Step 2 – Find the “Edit” option under the template name, and click on it to start editing;

Step 3 – Further, click on the “Edit with Elementor” button to open the Elementor editor;

Edit Template Design

Step 4 – Make modifications you need and click on the “Update” button. Next, click on the Elementor menu and “Exit to Dashboard” to return to template editor;

Step 5 – Also, if needed, you can update Elementor Header & Footer Options. Here, you can change the Type of Template, change the location (Display On), and limit specific User Roles.

Elementor Header & Footer Builder Options

Step 6 – Update the template to apply changes.

If you wish to remove any block, you can simply delete it or change the “Display on” settings.

In conclusion, you should now be equipped to build your website with Starter Templates without any hustle. Of course, if you still need help with any template designs, feel free to contact our Support Team.

Starter Templates Importing is a pretty straightforward process. All templates come with needed plugins and settings, giving you an exact look like the one in our Library. Naturally, you can adjust settings and add, modify or remove any imported content as you wish.

Furthermore, you can decide to import a complete website template, individual pages or add pre-designed elements to your designs.

This document will explain mentioned template options and show you how to import Starter Template to your website.

Starter Templates Plugin Basics

Once you install and activate your theme and Starter Templates plugin, you can access the Starter Templates Library. It’s a starting place where you can browse all available templates. Thus, navigate to Dashboard > Appearance > Starter Templates to start. Further below, we covered the main Library functions:

 • Select your Page Builder: in the upper right corner of the Library, you will find a Page Builder selector. Here, you can choose your preferred Page Builder, and the Templates library will be adjusted accordingly;
Select Your Page Builder
 • Sync Library: On the left, next to the page builder selector, you will find the “Sync Library” button. You will use these feature to sync your website Library with our server and refresh templates;
 • My favorite: Next to the Sync button, you can find the “My Favorite” option. Here, you’ll find all the templates you marked as favorite in the Library. You can mark any template as a favorite by clicking a heart-shaped icon at the bottom of the template cover;
 • Search Bar: In the middle of the Library’s top part, you will see a search bar. You can type the keywords to search templates by thier titles;
 • Filtering Options: You will find additional filtering options under the search bar. You can filter templates by category, separate premium templates, and sort them by popularity or publishing date.
Filter Starter Templates Library

Still, if you don’t wish to search and filter templates, you can scroll down and browse the Library that way.

Note:

Since Starter Template version 3.0.0 the importing process and Starter Templates UI were modified. If you’re using the older version of the Starter Templates plugin (free or Premium), your importing process will be different from the process described in this document.

Browsing Templates

 • Browse Templates: Each template in the library is represented with the cover picture. Once you find a template you like, just click on its cover picture to preview template.
 • Template Preview & Styling: When you click on any template, this will open a template live preview and styling options. Here, you can click on any template page and check them out. Further, you will have styling options where you can add your logo, choose the color palette and fonts.

What Happens When I Import a Starter Template?

The Starter Templates are built as fully functional websites. This means the Starter Templates importing process covers all steps needed for your website to look exactly like our demos.

After the import, the only thing left is to update the content (texts, logo, images) with your own. Now, your website is ready. Further down, we’ll show you the main differences between importing the whole website template and importing individual templates.

Importing a Complete Site Template

Once you click on any template in the Starter Template library, you can preview and style a template. Further, if you decided on the template and style, you can start the import process.

Import Complete Site

The Starter Templates importing process will do the following:

 • Install a Page Builder depending on your selection. For example, let’s say you select a template for Elementor. As a result, our plugin will install and activate the Elementor builder plugin as part of the import process;
 • Depending on the template, some additional plugins will be installed and activated. These can include plugins like WooCommerce, WPForms Lite, etc.

Further, some premium plugins could be installed, like Ultimate Addons for Elementor (UAE) or Ultimate Addons for Beaver Builder (UABB). These plugins are installed only when you import Elementor or Beaver Builder Premium templates;

Note

When you import Premium templates containing the UAE or UABB, the plugins will be activated and fully operational. At the same time, UAE or UABB license will not be automatically activated. Thus, you would also need to activate the license to receive future updates. Your license keys are available in Brainstorm Force Store, at Account > Licenses.

 • Import all customizer settings, including layout, colors, fonts, etc. automatically;
 • Add options you selected in the Preview and Styling steps (Logo, Colors, Fonts);
 • Add all pages and dummy posts;
 • Import the header, footer, menus, and dummy content also;
 • As mentioned, some templates are intended to work with plugins like WooCommerce or LearnDash. When you import these templates, the importing process will also add dummy content for these plugins (products, courses, etc.).

In addition, If you previously imported any Starter template, you can remove it altogether when importing a new one. To do this, check the “Delete Previously Imported Site” box when you start the import process. This option can also be located under the “Advanced Options” dropdown menu on the importing popup.

Starter Templates Importing

Keep in mind that importing process will only delete the content and settings added by the previously imported template. It will not remove any content you created yourself.

Any posts, pages, custom post types, etc., you added will still be present on your website. If you want to remove these, you have to do it manually.

Additionally, importing options allow you to select which elements of the template import can be omitted. For instance, you can select not to import the Customizer settings or dummy content.

You can find more details on this topic in the next Walktrough article about importing the complete site template (Free or Premium).

Importing a Single Page Starter Template

If you decide to import only an individual page (template), the import process will include only the following:

 • Install a Page Builder depending on your selection;
 • Add the single page template as a draft;
 • Import dummy content only for the single page template.

Depending on your customizer settings, the page might look different compared to our demos.

Also, some pages contain dynamic data which will not be imported in this case. Suppose you are using templates intended to work with plugins like WooCommerce or LearnDash. Here, the import process will add the design and dynamic elements (widgets, modules) but not the dynamic data (WooCommerce products, LearnDash courses, etc.).

Import a Single Template

Therefore, you will need to install and activate these plugins manually and add dynamic content yourself.

You can find more details on this topic in the article about importing single pages.

Note:

Since Starter Template version 3.0.0 you will not be able to import single-page templates for the Beaver Builder. We temporarily disabled this option.

Importing the Pre-designed Elements

Importing the pre-designed elements is only available with Elementor (Blocks) and Gutenberg (Patterns) builders.

You can import the block/pattern to your page, post, or other parts of your website that can be edited with the builder. The template will be added to your design as an individual element.

Import Pre-designed Elements

In this case, you will need to have all related (needed) plugins already installed. Also, to use this option, you’ll need to create the page or post by yourself.

You can find more details on this topic in articles about importing Elementor Blocks and Gutenberg Patterns.

Welcome to the Starter Templates Walkthrough. This walkthrough contains a series of documents, which will show you how to get the most out of Starter Templates. The goal is to help you start building great websites in no time.

About Starter Templates

The biggest boost to quickly building great websites is our Starter Templates collection. Our Library contains more than 100 ready-to-use free templates available to all Astra theme users. In addition, there are 120+ premium templates for users with Essential or Growth Bundle

Starting any project becomes much easier when you have a whole team to help you. Instead of starting from scratch, the Astra team designed great-looking templates for you to use.

Starter Templates are fully designed website templates made by our team, which can be imported using our free plugin. Similarly, you would need the Premium Starter Templates plugin to import the premium templates. You can download this plugin from Brainstorm Force Store.

Templates And Page Builders

You can choose templates based on your preferred Page Builder:

 • Gutenberg,
 • Elementor,
 • Beaver Builder, and
 • Brizy.

Note:

Since Starter Templates version 3.0.0, Brizy builder templates are not available by default. Accordingly, if you wish to import Brizy templates, you’ll need to enable this option. To do this, navigate to Dashboard > Settings > General and click on “Enable Brizy Page Builder Templates in Starter Templates” [screenshot].

Importing the whole website template will come with all of the needed plugins and dummy content. Thus, you don’t need additional plugins for templates to look exactly as shown in the Starter Templates library.

Also, you can import individual pages from any template, as well as pre-made blocks.

Once a template is imported, you just need to replace the dummy content with your own, and you’re done. Further, you are free to modify the template designs as you wish.

Free vs. Premium

When browsing the Starter Template library, you will notice that some templates have “PREMIUM” badges. These badges are used to distinguish Free templates from Premium ones.

Free and Premium Starter Templates

You have both free and Premium templates for many industries and different types of websites at your disposal. Thus there are no limits or differences between free and premium templates in what websites you can create.

The main difference between Free and Premium templates is the quality of the design. In addition, we use several premium tools (plugins) like Astra Pro and Ultimate Addons for Elementor or Ultimate Addons for Beaver Builder to design Premium templates.

These plugins provide specific design options and functionalities that are not available for free. That is an additional reason why Premium templates are available only for users with licenses for one of our Bundles.

How to Install Starter Templates plugins (Free and Premium)

Starter Templates can be imported using two different plugins, free and Premium.

Free Strater Templates

If you are looking only for our free templates, please follow these steps:

Step 1 – Navigate to the Dashboard > Plugins > Add New and download the free plugin from the WordPress repository;

Install Starter Templates

Step 2 – Install and Activate the Plugin;

Step 3 – Once the plugin is installed and activated, you can find the templates library at Dashboard > Appearance > Starter Templates

Though you will be able to see both free and premium templates in your library, you will be able to import only the free ones.

Premium Strater Templates

The process is slightly different if you need to import premium templates, as these are available only with the Premium Starter Templates plugin. You’ll need to buy a license for either our Essential Bundle or the Growth Bundle to use this plugin.

Please follow these steps to install the plugin and activate the license:

Step 1 – Log in to Brainstorm Force Store;

Step 2 – Download the plugin at Account > Downloads. This will save a .zip file on your computer. Stay logged in, as you will need your license a bit later.

Download Premium Starter Templates

Step 3 – Login to your website admin area (Dashboard).

Step 4 – Navigate to Plugins > Add New and click on “Upload Plugin”. Choose the .zip file you previously downloaded from our store and click on the “Install Now” button.

Step 5 – Get your Premium Starter Templates license from Brainstorm Force Store (Account > Licenses). The detailed step-by-step instructions are available in this article

Note

Please keep in mind that Premium Starter Templates have their own license key, so you can’t use the key for other plugins here (e.g., Astra Pro key, etc.)

Step 6 – Once you have installed and activated the plugin and got your license key, it’s time to activate your license too. Hence, navigate to Dashboard > Plugins.

Here, you will notice the “Activate License” button under the plugin name. Also, there will be a notice at the top of the page. Click to button or notice, and add your license in the license popup.

Activate Premium Starter Templates License

Step 7 – Now, after the license is activated, you can find the templates library at Dashboard > Appearance > Starter Templates

If you previously used the free plugin on the same website, you need to deactivate or remove the free plugin before using the “Premium Starter Templates” plugin.

Note

If you bought our Essential Bundle, you had to decide on Ultimate Addons for Elementor or Ultimate Addons for Beaver Builder bundle.

Depending on the option you opted for, you will be able to import premium templates only for the chosen builder.

In other words, by choosing Bundle with Ultimate Addons for Elementor, you can import the premium templates for the Elementor. Premium templates for Beaver Builder will not be available (and vice versa).

Starter Templates – Wireframe Blocks https://wpastra.com/docs/starter-templates-wireframe-blocks/ https://wpastra.com/docs/starter-templates-wireframe-blocks/#respond Mon, 27 Sep 2021 10:01:01 +0000 https://wpastra.com/?post_type=docs&p=104422 Starter Templates – Wireframe Blocks Read More »

]]>
Wireframing the structure of any website before beginning the design process is very important. It increases work efficiency, makes the workflow more effortless, and helps you get the final website design ready in less time. Now you can create your page or website mockup faster than ever with Starter Templates Wireframe Blocks.

This document will help you to understand how wireframe blocks work and what benefits they bring.

What Are the Wireframe Blocks?

Wireframing means having a basic structure of your webpage like some sections, their layout, image position, text position, and so on. This gives you an idea of how you can manage content on any webpage.

But if you ever try creating wireframes using online tools or even with simple pen-paper, you will understand it is not quite easy. You will have to understand and study how online tool works. And well, working with pen-paper is neither convenient nor reliable as the design might end up undone.

Usually, you would create wireframes on external platforms and then transfer the designs to your website. Starter Templates offers ready-to-use wireframe blocks right inside the Gutenberg editor, helping you avoid those extra efforts. You can now create your wireframe design directly on your website.

Benefits of using wireframe blocks:

 • Provides basic structure to start any website design.
 • Save your time in creating a wireframe with an external tool or traditional pen-paper
 • Just replace image, text and add colors in the wireframe to make the final website design ready in less time
 • Make website designing smooth and effortless

How To Use the Wireframe Blocks?

The Wireframe blocks can be accessed through the page/post editor. You can add an unlimited number of blocks and create the whole page or post structure in no time.

Note

The Wireframe Blocks are available with Starter Templates version 2.7.0 and above. Once you update your Starter Template plugin, please navigate to Appearance > Starter Templates and sync the templates Library (the “Sync” button is located in the top right corner of the Library).

We’ll show you an example of how you can create a page structure that you can share with your team or client:

Step 1 – Navigate to Dashboard > Pages > Add New. In the top menu of the page editor, click on the “Starter Templates” button. This will open the Starter Templates Library;

Page Editor - Starter Templates Button

Step 2 – In the top menu of the Library, click on the “Wireframes” tab. Here you can find all wireframe blocks available;

Wireframe Blocks Library

Step 3 – Here, you can filter the blocks by color and category and import the wireframe block to your page. You can do this by hovering over the block you need and clicking on the “Import” button;

Import Wireframe Blocks

Step 4 – Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you import all the blocks you need;

Step 5 – Once imported, you can reposition and modify blocks as you wish. Once your wireframe design is done, click on the “Publish” button to save your changes.

Now you’re ready to review and share your mockup with whomever you want.

Once the final page design is decided, there is no need to create a new page. You can directly modify the wireframe blocks as needed and replace placeholders with your content.

That’s all. Your wireframe design is turned into the final design in no time.

Could not store XML file in /wp-content/ folder? https://wpastra.com/docs/could-not-store-files-in-wp-content-folder/ Tue, 18 May 2021 13:44:27 +0000 https://wpastra.com/?post_type=docs&p=90699 Could not store XML file in /wp-content/ folder? Read More »

]]>
One of the reasons your Starter Templates import could fail is storing the XML file. To import the template content, WordPress needs to store an XML file in the /wp-content/ folder. In this case, you might see an error that says something like this:

The import process was interrupted due to the lack of file-system permissions from your host.

Could not store XML file

Also, you will see what file-system permissions are missing. For example, in the screenshot above, you will notice that “write permissions” are missing. You need both “Read” and “Write” permissions to import Starter Templates successfully.

Here, a possible reason could be that your host is offloading /wp-content/ folder to a third-party server. This means that the content is stored in some other place, for example, cloud storage. Thus, you will need to get in touch with your hosting provider. Accordingly, check if /wp-content/ folder offloading can be temporarily disabled with your host.

Since storing XML files is a requirement of WordPress itself, unfortunately, there is no workaround. Depending on your host, you might be able to change the file-system permissions yourself. Otherwise, if this is not possible or you are unsure how to do it, please contact your host.

How to Fix 5XX Error While Importing a Starter Template? https://wpastra.com/docs/5xx-error-starter-templates/ Fri, 14 May 2021 12:13:01 +0000 https://wpastra.com/?post_type=docs&p=90336 How to Fix 5XX Error While Importing a Starter Template? Read More »

]]>
Did you try to import templates for your website using the Starter Templates plugin, and your import failed?

Do you see a 5XX error like for example:

Error: 500 Allowed memory size of XXXXXXXX bytes exhausted (tried to allocate XXXXX bytes)

This error can be seen on the Starter Template “import process interrupted” notification popup or in the debug.log file.

This can happen if any of the following is true:

 • There is an issue with plugins on the site (Plugin conflicts / PHP error)
 • There is an issue with the hosting (Resources such as old PHP version / exhausted resources)

Let’s take a look at how this can be fixed:

Step One: Avoid Conflicts

Deactivate all plugins except Starter Templates to get rid of any possible issues with other plugins. And try importing the template again.

Did it work? Awesome!

If not, let’s continue to the next step:

Step Two: Check WP Debug Log

Enable WordPress debugging mode by installing the WP Debugging plugin and try importing a starter template. This plugin will provide log files to get an idea of what might be causing the issue.

Still no luck? Let’s move on.

Step Three: Update PHP Version

WordPress works with PHP versions as old as PHP 5.6. However, all PHP versions before PHP 7.3 are end-of-life (EOL), meaning they no longer receive updates. Because of this, your site may be exposed to security vulnerabilities.

Moreover, old PHP versions slow down the website and cause other issues.

This article will help you understand how to check the PHP version of your website. We recommend getting on the latest possible PHP version, or at least 7.3.

Step Four: Increase Resources Set by Host

In many cases, Starter Templates import can fail because of the limits set by server PHP configuration.

Your website needs a certain amount of resources to function properly. Depending on the activities on your website and all the plugins running, there may be just not enough resources left for the successful template import. In this case, we would suggest modifying your PHP configuration to the following recommended values (values are approximate):

memory_limit = 512M
max_execution_time = 900
max_input_time = 900
post_max_size = 256M
upload_max_filesize = 720M

These settings will ensure that there are enough resources on your website, even if you’re, for example, running some highly demanding plugins. These are not, in any case, the minimum required values, as the Starter Templates plugin needs minimal resources. Thus, you can also try increasing your values gradually and checking if you can import your template successfully with those settings.

For many non-techie users, this might feel daunting, and checking the log files process will differ from host to host. So it is always better to get it done by someone who knows it well.

So feel free to get in touch with your hosting company, and they will be happy to do it for you.

Here is an email that you can send:

Host Email Template:

Hello,

I’m trying to import a starter template from the plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/astra-sites/. And it appears that my website is getting a 500 – Internal Server Error. Is it possible for you to:

1) Enable WordPress debugging mode

2) Check the log files

3) Share the file with me?

Also the plugin documentation mentioned recommended PHP configuration to be used. Could you please apply the following values for my website:

PHP Version: 7.3 or latest possible

memory_limit = 512M

max_execution_time = 900

max_input_time = 900

post_max_size = 256M

upload_max_filesize = 720M

Can you help me with this?

Still no luck? Please feel free to get in touch with our support, and we will be happy to take a look. But before that.. one question for you:

Is Your Website With Good Host?

We have mostly seen this happen on low-end hosting. Such hosting servers are shared by many different websites, and hence individual users don’t get enough resources that their website needs to perform properly.

The above PHP configuration helps in many cases, but it does not guarantee your website will get those resources. If a server does not have any resources left, your website won’t have them available for the Starter Template import, no matter how we configure it.

We always recommend opting for decent hosting as it is a crucial part of running a healthy website. If you are looking for recommendations, we have a few. They all come with a trial period / money-back guarantee.

Importing a template to your website will send the connection request to our server for transferring the template data. One of the reasons this process could fail is that something blocks your website’s requests to our server. In this case, you will see the following message:

WP_Error – User has blocked requests through HTTP.

The connection request flow looks like this:

Starter Templates Import Request Flow

When the connection from your host to our API server is blocked, this error happens.

The possible reasons and solutions are following:

 • Some plugins installed on your website could be a cause of this issue. Please deactivate plugins temporarily and try again. We have seen this fixes the issue in 95% of the cases.
 • Your host might be using a firewall on their server, which might be blocking requests to our server (websitedemos.net). Please get in touch with your host and ask if their firewall or security modules are blocking websitedemos.net This is the email template that you could use:

Host Email Template:

Hello,

I’m trying to import a starter template from the plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/astra-sites/.

It appears that my host server is not able to connect to websitedemos.net. The connection is essential for importing a starter template I need.

What could be the reason my website is not able to connect to websitedemos.net? Is there a firewall or any security modules on the server which might be blocking this?

If so, is it possible to unblock the connection to websitedemos.net?

Can you please take a look? I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank You!

How to Fix Operation Timed Error While Importing a Starter Template? https://wpastra.com/docs/operation-timed-error-starter-templates/ Fri, 14 May 2021 11:59:04 +0000 https://wpastra.com/?post_type=docs&p=90328 How to Fix Operation Timed Error While Importing a Starter Template? Read More »

When you import a template, the data are being transferred to your server. If you see the error description like the one shown below, the error is caused by a server not being able to respond to a connection request in a timely manner:

Error: 500 Maximum execution time of XXX seconds exceeded

The connection request flow looks like this:

Starter Templates Import Process Flow

That means that the whole flow you see in the image above needs to be completed within the set time frame (30 seconds in this case). If the above connection request flow does not complete in the allowed time frame, it will cause the connection request to timeout and the import process to fail.

How To Fix This?

Please follow these steps and try importing again with each step. Let’s start:

 1. Simply try importing the template again. Something temporary could have caused the delay. Chances are, it works in the next attempt.
 2. No luck with the previous step? Try again but using a different browser. There might be something in your browser (maybe an extension) blocking the request and causing a time-out.
 3. Next, if you’re using VPN, please try turning it off.
 4. If that didn’t help, please temporarily deactivate a security plugin on your website if you’re using it (Ex – Wordfence, iThemes Security, etc.)
 5. If all previous steps didn’t solve it, deactivate all of your plugins except Starter Templates and give it another try (some other plugin on your website may be causing conflict)

Still Having Issues?

Contact your hosting provider and ask them to help, as your host might be causing the conflict. You could use the following template to contact your hosting provider:

Host Email Template:

Hello,

I’m building a WordPress website using the Astra theme. I’m trying to import a template using the “Starter Templates” plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/astra-sites/), but the process keeps failing.

Here is the error notice I am receiving –

‘WP_Error – cURL error 28: Operation timed out after 30001 milliseconds with 0 bytes received

Would you please take a look? I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you!

So, you tried to import the Starter Template, but the import failed? In this case, you might have seen a popup that says – “Import Process Interrupted”. Here, most of the time the issues are related to your server settings and resources.

Since this can happen for more than one reason, it’s not easy to know the exact issue straight away. Thus, in this document, we will explain the most common issues and how you can solve themthem.

Let’s Understand Importing Fundamentals

All starter templates are stored on our server (websitedemos.net). When you choose a template you would like to import, the Starter Template plugin connects to our server and imports the files to your website. This process has a specified flow which includes a connection request being sent from your server and receiving back the template data with a reply from our server.

The connection request flow looks like this:

Starter Templates Import Process Flow

Now, you understand the basics of how the import process. Therefore, let’s explore some common issues that we have seen in the import process.

Importing Issues

These are the most common reasons your Starter Template import can fail:

500 / 502 / Any 5XX Error

5XX error can happen for more than one reason. Namely, this error is mostly related to the available server resources or caused by one of your installed plugins. Thus, you would need to check your plugins or update the PHP configuration on your server.

Please check this article on how to fix the error which says: 500 – Internal Server Error

Connection Timeout

As previously described, importing a template to your website will require the template files to be transferred from our server. The Starter Templates plugin on your website will initiate a connection request to do this. If this complete flow for this request is not successful in a specific time, it will fail, and you will get this error like this: WP_Error – cURL error 28: Operation timed out after 30001 milliseconds with 0 bytes received.

Please check this article for understanding how to fix it.

Blocked Request

As mentioned, there needs to be communication between your server and ours for the template to be imported. Sometimes it happens that the connection request coming from your server gets blocked. If this is the case, you will see the following error: WP_Error – User has blocked requests through HTTP.

Please check this article on how to fix this error.

XML file storing issue

To import the template content, WordPress needs to store an XML file in the /wp-content/ folder. This issue could be related to your host offloading /wp-content/ folder to a third-party server. In this case, you might see an error that says something like this: Looks like your host could not store XML file in /wp-content/ folder.

Please check this article on how to fix this error.

Other issues

In case your starter template import process is interrupted for any other reason, or the solutions above don’t help, please open a Support ticket. Our support team will have to inspect your issue and help you find the solution. Please do have in mind that most of the issues you can face with Starter Template imports are server-related.

Since our Support team can’t access your server settings, we will point you to the root of the problem. Further, you will have to make modifications to your server yourself or by contacting your hosting company.
